If you experience abdominal cramping, you are probably asking, what helps cramps go away? Women are more susceptible to suffering from abdominal cramps due to certain conditions that affect the reproductive system.

However, everyone can experience abdominal cramping. Cramps are uncomfortable and painful, and you must know how to deal with them so you can go about your daily activities. Our small guide will show you how to get rid of this problem.

What Causes Abdominal Cramping?

Abdominal cramping is a result of muscle contractions in the abdomen. The pain can be sudden, gradual, acute or chronic. Although cramps are often a sign of a minor sickness, they can also be a symptom of serious health conditions.

Menstruation and digestive disorders can cause mild to moderate spasms. On the other hand, severe and persistent cramping can be caused by organ inflammation, pregnancy complications, or even cancer.

Digestive conditions that cause abdominal cramps include:

  • Food poisoning.
  • Constipation
  • Excessive gas
  • Diarrhea
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Ulcers
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Bowel obstructions
  • Pancreas inflammation
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Hernias
  • Diverticular disease

Women often need special help with cramps. In addition to menstruation pain, abdominal cramping in women can also be caused by endometriosis (uterus cells grow in other parts of body), uterine fibroids (benign tumors in uterus walls) and ovarian cysts (benign sacs of fluids).

There are a variety of foods that help period cramps while others aggravate them. Salt and magnesium-rich foods such as beans may cause bloating and water retention. Whole food that helps cramps go away include antioxidant-rich dark chocolate and iron-rich raisins.

Things to help spams go away include mild to moderate exercises. When you are suffering from stomach cramps, you should try your best to do some physical exercises.

Take note, however, if the pain gets worse during exercise, stop it immediately. Aerobics are great exercises to ease abdominal cramps. This type of exercise releases endorphins in the body, which acts as pain blockers. Thus, the endorphins will relieve the pain. Performing kickboxing, tennis, cycling or jogging keeps muscles taut and stretched.

If you have a strong core, you are less likely to experience stomach cramps. Some workouts help in strengthening your core muscles, such as crunches.

Can yoga help you? It sure will. Yoga is an exercise that relaxes the body due to its rhythmic breathing and relaxing poses. The exercise can ease the cramp pain. Further, yoga is great for strengthening the core muscles, too.

If you really cannot stand the pain, taking medication can help with spams. It is best to take antacids or acetaminophen to ease the stomach cramps rather than taking ibuprofen because it can irritate the stomach lining. It is not good, though, to always rely on over-the-counter medication when suffering from this problem.

You can apply a heat pack on your tummy if you are experiencing cramps. An electric heating pad will help. You can also take a warm bath in a tub to ease the pain.

If the pain cannot be self-treated, it is time to go to the doctor for a medical examination. Your cramps may be a manifestation of a more serious health problem.

Changing your diet and lifestyle can also help prevent cramp attacks in the future. You must try to maintain your body’s health all the time to avoid sickness that leads to stomach cramps. This way, you don’t have to keep looking for products and solutions for what helps cramps go away.
